Dutch wants to start a war with the Hullen. She and D'avin plan to recruit other RACs to poison the plasma pools located near their stations, and they recruit a black market dealer to track down a beacon that the Hullen want. Meanwhile, in another part of the J, Johnny tracks down an SOS from Clara only to find another hackmod wearing Clara's arm with no idea how she came to have it.
Annie and Stephanie discuss the Season 3 premiere of Killjoys.
Quick Reviews
- Stephanie: I was both absolutely touched and delighted by this episode. It featured the aspects of Killjoys that I love the most: humor and heart. The adventures of Dutch & friends were full of action, quips, and teamwork, and the spine of the episode was the wonderful relationship between Dutch and Johnny. I really liked all the new characters who were introduced, and I was pleased how many of them were played by POC.
- Annie: I loved this opening episode. So great to see the extended Killjoys team back together, plus a few new allies. I was a bit surprised Aneela herself didn’t make an appearance, but I love how Dutch is slowly drawing out the Hullen and building up an army for the war. And Johnny and Dutch remaining the most important relationship in the series — that’s the heart of it for me!
Stuff Happened
- Dutch and her team storm a would-be Hullen hive only to find one guy left to give them a message: the rest of the Hullen in the Quad are hiding, preparing. Intel that Johnny has sent from other planets indicates that other RAC stations are positioned close to other plasma pools.
- Dutch and D'avin want to enlist other RAC agents to poison their pools, but they need more black goo to do it.
- They kidnap a black market dealer named Pippin to find a beacon that the Hullen are after. They meet with the dealer who has the beacon, but afterward they are shortly arrested by the Company.
- But the arrest was part of their plan all along! They were trying to draw out some Hullen with the beacon. They attack the group that kidnapped them with Khylen's plasma-killing darts and collect the black goo, so that they can use it to kill other plasma parent sources.
- Johnny and Clara got separated. When Johnny follows an SOS signal from Clara's arm he discovers that it has a new wearer named Olli. Olli says that she blacked out, woke up wearing the arm, and followed the same SOS signal to where she encountered Johnny.
- Johnny and Olli go to Rat City, following Clara's footsteps. They visit a hackmod bar and speak to Yoki, whom Clara went to see, and she warns them off. Another warning comes from a plasma infused hackmod? a Hullen in a second skin suit? who beats up Olli.
- 437 Hullen/formerly Level XI killjoys have stopped showing up for work, so an oversight team led by Banyon Grey is assuming control of the RAC. Turin is playing ball, but Dutch is not pleased.
- Turn’s discovery of the Hullen ships lying in wait. And D’avin can access them!
Things Made Us Happy
- “How are you two with intense heat and unnecessary nudity?” “Pretty good, actually.”
- The spa kidnapping
- Messages between Johnny and Dutch
- Johnny calling Dutch his “wifey, boss, nonsexual life partner”
- Even though Johnny is off doing his own thing, he and Dutch are still in contact, and he is still trying to help her, gathering intel on the different plasma pools.
- Johnny getting his mod “I am the greatest man that ever lived.”
- D'avin, Pree, Alvis, and Fancy arming up to take out the Hullen, Fancy’s new boomerang
- Dutch's negotiation skills
- Lucy conveying Pip's message to Dutch and D'avin
- The team giving Pippin a hard time when they get arrested: “Nailed it!”
- Seeing more of the hackmod culture and new vocabulary! (specs, jumpers, grips, owls, tagging)
- Interrogations
- On rewatch, there are clear hints at Dutch and D'avin's manipulation of Pippin, though they are easily overlooked or quickly forgotten on first viewing.
- Lost Girl alums: Tommie-Amber Pirie (Olli) played Sylvie in “Caged Fae” and Emily Piggford (Yoki) played Tomoe in “Big in Japan.”
Questions
- What the heck was up with the guy who threatened Olli? Was he supposed to be Hullen with some kind of skin graft? Or a hackmod infused with plasma?
- What is Olli's backstory? Was she targeted by the plasma guy for another reason besides asking about Clara?
- Did Havigan set up Olli and Johnny? He was the one who arranged the meet.
- Where's Clara? Will we get to see her this season? (Stephanie Leonidas was in Snatch, which aired earlier this year, so it's possible she had scheduling conflicts.)
