Charlotte learns more about the unknown clone who has been hospitalized with a mysterious illness. Cosima tries to better understand what Sturgis was up to at GRIT and finds herself in a very precarious situation. Kira is suspicious about data being downloaded from GeneKeep's servers late at night.
Kris and Stephanie discuss episode 1×05 of Orphan Black: The Next Chapter, “To Ignore the Obvious.”
Title Reference
“Why can’t I do what others have done—ignore the obvious. Live a normal life. It’s hard enough just to do that in this world.”
Octavia E. Butler, Parable of the Sower
Charlotte, Alison & the Gemini Population
- The Gemini Population grew up with each other, knowing they were clones. Obviously at some point, Vivi was removed from the group and raised naive until now. Why?
- How many clones are in the Gemini Population?
- Dana seems to tell Charlotte that the disease making them sick isn't fatal (which Sturgis confirms to Vivi), but are they being treated successfully? How concerned should we be about Charlotte being exposed?
- Alison is THE WORST spy. “She pretended to look up directions while also actually looking up directions.”
- Arun clearly knows more than he revealed to Vivi, which is concerning, but maybe he can be trusted?
Kira
- How long is this internship? What's your long-term housing strategy here, Kira?
- It's endearing how flustered Kira gets around Em.
- OK, and clearly Dr. Bai and that network download are super shady.
- The TAG project can target specific genetic markers, and GeneKeep has a database of unique genes found in specific populations. Uh oh.
- Charlotte and Kira are close friends, but have interestingly opposite views on publicly acknowledging their unique genetic make-up.
Cosima & Delphine
- So many emotions!
- “Wife nest” and nose boops…it's similarly satisfying as reading fanfic. And they just don't want the other person to get involved in something dangerous and be hurt!
- But COSIMA. Clearly you're going to make things worse.
- The previous episodes have hinted at Cosima's frustration, but in this episode she articulates very clearly what all has been bothering her:
Withholding all her best research from her perfect and perfectly dull academic papers? Her wife’s baby clock tick-tocking along, heedless of Cosima’s reservations? The long, slow ache of her soul being amputated as she and her sestras drifted further apart with no grand conspiracies to bind them together? It had all happened so easily before, impossible as it sounded—how did you slowly become a stranger to yourself, your genetic mirrors? - Cosima is “back on her bullshit.” She hasn't historically been the “sneaky” clone, so it was fun to read about her breaking into Sturgis's apartment. Though Felix could have told her that she cannot hide in minimalist furniture.
- Schematics for an auto-administering injection system. Looked like it had some kind of sensor for scanning and estimating mass.
- DNA Malware encoding strategies for hair follicles; “Hijacking a sequencing computer, for instance, and whatever network it was connected to”
- Patent for mini-drone software
- Cosima gets to say “fuck” in the audiobook, and it just feels so right.
Vivi, Sturgis & Cosima
- Vivi breaking into the RCMP office with Jay’s id info
- Probably not an intentional reference, but Jay's colleague showering croissant crumbs over the desk reminded Stephanie of Helena eating a muffin at Beth's desk in season 1
- Clone mirror: Vivi thinks about Sturgis, “Nathaniel, you crafty devil.” Later Cosima thinks about him, “You beautiful idiot.”
- Clones being judgy about others’ lax security. But you’d think all of the clones would just carry gloves at all times by now.
- Sturgis admits to blowing up the lab. Did he remove the paper files?
- Sturgis also says the C-word. He clearly knows about the Gemini population, but does he know about LEDA?
- Sturgis was probably shot by a sniper, right?
- COSIMA, YOU MADE THINGS WORSE.
