We love on K.C. Collins this week and share our appreciation for Hale and the actor who plays him. We talk about our favorite Hale moments, what we love about Hale, and sing the praises of our favorite siren.

Drink Special: Fare Thee Well

3 oz Gin
½ oz Dry vermouth
½ oz Sweet vermouth
Dash Cointreau

Pour ingredients into a mixing glass over ice. Stir well. Strain into a martini glass.

Hale Didn't Care About Status

Hale was never perfect, but eulogies aren't the places to point out flaws. They are places to point out what's good about a character, and for that there is not enough space.

Of everyone, Hale had the least reason to fight the status quo. As a fae, he was taught his superiority from birth. As a member of a royal clan, he was privileged above even most other fae. But he rejected his family's stance on power and the binary divide, as well as their anti-humaness, choosing to work a job, work with humans, and work with Dark fae. After he earned position as Ash, Hale could have seen himself as above the law, but he stepped back after realizing how his position was adversely affecting him and those around him.
Hale was willing to give up his status, his privilege, and even his life for his friends. He died after years having fought for the human he loved, for his own conscience, and for what he believed was the greater good. May we all strive to do the same.

Hale was a gentleman ..despite being from a high clan of FAE ..he has been warm to humans & his love for Kenzi since S1 has been lovely to watch! Loved his partnership with Dyson ..n Trick..! KC was brilliant ..so sad to see him go!

Hale's Love of Tea

  • Early character moment was his appreciation of Trick's tea in “It's a Fae, Fae, Fae, Fae World”
  • Reminds Stephanie of the exchange with Kenzi in “It's Better to Burn Out Than Fae Away” where he uses his siren whistle to cure Kenzi's hangover headache
  • He seemed to be the character who drank the least on Lost Girl
  • In line with his tendency to be the “responsible one,” holding down the fort when Dyson runs off at the end of seasons one and two

Hale's Style

  • Stephanie dons a fedora in memory of Hale.
  • We all loved Hale's wardrobe, especially his hats.
  • Stephanie wonders if he might have been born in the 1920s and been a young man in the 1940s and '50s because he seems to favor that style of dress.

i loved hale and i cant believe hes gone he and kenzi had some very funny and touching moments together! his friendship with dyson i also loved but im probably going to miss his clothing style mostly he always looked good (even when he was an ashole he still looked good in the suits) anyway it was good to have kc on the show he will be missed 🙂

Hale's Gentle Nature

  • In contrast to Dyson, he tended to take a more measured approach, less aggressive
  • When Kenzi was upset about waking up with a dead guy on top of her in “Can't See the Fae-rest,” Hale just hugs Kenzi and comforts her.

I didn’t love Hale in the same way I love Lauren and Bo, but I certainly had great affection for him and was shocked and saddened by his death. He was such a sweet, kind, mellow guy whose siren power — gentle, musical, rarely used with lethal intent — seemed to match his temperament perfectly. With so many male characters vying to be alphas, Hale was content to be a wingman and he balanced out Dyson’s nature beautifully. You could tell that he accepted the mantle of Ash very reluctantly and it never sat comfortably on his shoulders.The peremptory, imperious tone he used when he told Lauren she couldn’t take a weekend leave (towards the endof S3) was jarring precisely because it was so unlike him. Wielding power, coersion, dominating others — that just wasn’t Hale. But first and foremost, I loved Hale because he loved Kenzi. More than any other character except Bo perhaps, he understood her unique qualities and strengths. He also understood her vulnerabilities but rather than crashing through glass doors in his haste to be her knight (like some other characters who shall remain anonymous) he was quietly supportive, nurturing and protective without diminishing Kenzi as a person or challenging her autonomy.

Hale as Sidekick

  • Hale seemed comfortable in the supportive role. He didn't need to lead the charge.
  • However, his friends could always count on him.
  • We think this was partially why the role of Ash didn't sit well for him, having to shut out Kenzi in order to be a leader.

Hale Is a Male Siren!

  • We love that Hale is a male siren!
  • K.C. admitted at Dragon*Con that he didn't know that there aren't traditionally male sirens, but when he found out it he thought it was pretty cool.
  • We love the versatility of his siren power and that it often wasn't deadly.

“Death Did Not Become Him”

  • Hale is trying to be responsible (as he does), and Kenzi is pushing him to let loose and have some fun in this episode.
  • The ab shot heard round the world (because of everyone gasping in admiration)
  • Stephanie likes that Hale's reaction to Kenzi staring at him was, “Can I help you?” almost as if he didn't really understand why Kenzi would be so transfixed
  • We think a lot of Hale's humbleness comes from K.C. When Kris and Stephanie interacted with him at Dragon*Con he seemed to be a bit embarrassed by all the attention his abs get.
  • Annie says that at Fan Expo, Paul Amos made a comment about K.C.'s “luscious lips,” and K.C. laughed and looked a bit embarrassed.

“The Girl Who Fae'd With Fire”

  • Stephanie loved the backstory we got for Hale in season 2 in regards to his family background.
  • She loves that Hale was a idealist and wanted to carve out a different future for the Fae.
  • Annie loved seeing the dynamic between Hale and his family, especially Hale and Val.
  • Hale giving Kenzi his nonna's fascinator was also a great moment because he was so pleased with it and Kenzi just wasn't.
  • Stephanie's heart aches for Hale when he leaves the clubhouse at the end of the episode and looks back at Kenzi being couple-y with Nate.

What the character Hale represented for me was the loyalty and friendship we all want to have from those around us. Hale’s secret feelings for Kenzi was like that first love everyone experienced- shy, unsure of the whole thing- but never once did he question human vs Fae kinda love. Bo-Dyson-Lauren whatever the match-up could take a lesson from the quiet but observant Siren—let’s face it we all saw this match-up coming- just wish they had a chance…. as for KC , the couple of times I had the privilege to see him- I could see that shy – quiet “Hale” in him- his grandma watches the show you know–lol I know we will see KC in the future- no matter what character he will play “Hale’s” sweetness & loyalty will be there in my recollection. Thank you KC for giving us Hale!! xo We love KC Collins

“End of a Line”

  • Annie loves that Hale called Kenzi “lil mama” when he proposed.
  • The look Hale gives Kenzi right before he's stabbed with the kitana — that's all the love he has for her. He looks at her as though everything is going to be OK. But it isn't. Sob!

So much reasons !! Hale is just an awesome friend for the rest, also a man so sweet, funny and kind, romantic, also brave and courageous .. I love each Hale moment but going t say the moment when he saves Kenzi’s life during the Garuda story .. I loved also during the Original Skin ep, when Ciara is in his body and let us know that in reality he feels very lonely inside .. I loved the family reunion, the moments with Kenzi .. I’ve been so suprized and loved to see that he actually kicked the ass of Vex ! And this final scene … when he come in the rescue of Kenzi and fight Massimo with so much rage .. what a powerful scene .. Will always regret Hale, AND KC as actor in the show xo

Hale & Kenzi

  • We love the sidekick solidarity conversation between the two of them.
  • Annie liked the moment in “Hail, Hale” when Hale finally confessed to Kenzi that he loves her, that's she not just a friend. Stephanie also loved in “Sleeping Beauty School” when Hale is practicing to tell Kenzi that he wants to be with her.
  • In “(Dis)Members Only,” Hale tries to put the moves on Kenzi while they're hiding behind the desk.
  • In “Blood Lines,” they do the complicated handshake.
  • In “(Dis)Members Only,” Hale and Kenzi make gagging faces about Bo and Dyson making out in The Dal and bet when Bo and Dyson will break up again.
  • In “Death Did Not Become Him,” Kenzi thanks Hale for not selling her and when he makes a smart remark, she smacks his arms and says, “Owwwww!”
  • In “Original Skin,” Kenzi asks “How do I know if a dude's inside me?” and Hale replies, “Been a while?”
  • In “ArachnoFaebia,” Hale catches Kenzi running a scam and she cuts him in for a percentage.

Hale & Dyson

  • Everyone loved the “bro-mantic” moment between Hale and Dyson in “Hail, Hale” when Dyson gives him the Twig of Zamora.
  • We really loved the moment between the two of them in “Sleeping Beauty School” when Dyson encouraged him to go for it with Kenzi.

Hale & Bo

  • We wish Hale and Bo had been able to develop more of a relationship.
  • Stephanie really liked the two of them hunting UnderFae together in “Something Wicked This Fae Comes,” and Bo telling Hale “You suck, siren!” when she loses the rock-paper-scissors match.
  • Of course, there was always the time when Bo licked his face in “ArachnoFaebia.” Awkward.

Hale & Others

  • Annie would have loved to see Hale and Tamsin form a relationship in season 4. Though he was Ash in season 3, it would have been great to see them compare notes as Dyson's partners.
  • We love the moment between Hale and Lauren at the end of “Original Skin” where he is helping Lauren walk. We wish we'd seen some closure to the tenseness their relationship took on in season 3 when Hale was Ash.

Loved KC as Hale. KC took Hale from comic sidekick to a very believable Ash. The transition was beautifully fluid. It was a pleasure to watch. KC played every aspect of Hale so well that none of them seemed awkward or fake.. The (deadly) Siren, the (heir) son, the loyal partner, the hesitant lover, and the (very capable) Ash. KC played them all effortlessly. Hale saved the day at the end of season three and I remember clapping and thinking ‘Hale’s the man!’ When Hale blew out Vex’s ear drums I thought wholey cryst he’s going to kill him… KC pitched forward just the right amount to make Hale look like an extremely deadly force, it was perfect and another tribute to KC’s care of Hale. I’ll stop here and simply say I’m going to miss KC & Hale big-time.

Bring Hale Back Already!

  • The writers can (and should) totally bring back K.C. Collins. We just need a flashback episode for Dyson and/or Trick when Hale is around.
  • Kris also points out Hale's similarities to Gladys Witham on Bomb Girls, which leads to Stephanie pleading with the Bomb Girls writers to write Hale in as a cop on the 1940s Toronto police force. Gladys could work with him in her C.I.A. spying duties!

He is my favorite character second to Kenzi. I was absolutely devastated when he was killed off. I will miss his brilliant smile, his measured approach to problem solving, and the way he called Kenz “li'l mama”. I really would have loved to have seen him be the Ash for a long time. It would have been cool to watch that dynamic paired with the rest of the gang. Hale, I will miss you! And if you happen to do a Jedi ghost appearance, well, I wouldn't mind.

  • Also in “Original Skin,” when Hale (in Ciara's body) is disturbed by his desire to kiss Dyson
  • In “Faetal Justice,” when Bo and Lauren are on the outs and Hale susses out the tension between the two of them. Hale is all of us in this moment
  • In “In Memoriam,” when Hale is counting off the beats as he dances with Kenzi

We'll Miss K.C.!

  • Not every character death affects people equally. It's a tribute to K.C. (and Hale) that fandom has been so affected by Hale's passing.
  • Thank you to K.C. We feel so privileged and thankful to have had him on Lost Girl.

I agree with so much of what is written above. KC Collins brought humanity to his fae character and I will miss the shy, loyal Hale who, I feel, was the best male character on Lost Girl. Both KC and Hale were under utilized and I wish we could have had at least one more episode with the gang all together before he left. Best of luck to KC in all his future endeavers!
