From Trevor Yuile’s atmospheric score to Alison’s party playlist of ‘90s pop hits, Orphan Black uses music to highlight character and tone. Kris and Stephanie discuss the music used in the show as well as the playlists the writers and Tatiana Maslany used to create the characters.
Favorite Music Moments
- “Bad Girls” by M.I.A. as Sarah prepares to pretend to be Beth
- German version of “These Boots” playing as Sarah pretends to be Katja
- Alison singing “Bortch” in her minivan
- All the ‘90s pop in “Variations under Domestication,” particularly at Alison’s party
- “Lovefool” by The Cardigans plays during the transition from Alison’s party to Cosima and Delphine running with the bottles of wine
- Helena dancing with the tail in “Parts Developed in an Unusual Manner”
Trevor Yuile’s score / Two Fingers theme song
- Really capture the feel of the show
- Trevor’s SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/trevyuile
- Dubstep/bass music
Sarah
- Writers’ playlist: some techno/electronica, garage rock/punk revival, The Clash
- TMas’ playlist: all British musicians (The Clash, Dizzee Rascal, The Streets, The Prodigy), pretty energetic music but “Straight to Hell” by The Clash and “Turn the Page” by The Streets are more contemplative; Dizzee Rascal songs are very brash/have a lot of attitude
- Our picks: “Unorthodox Daughter” by No Lay
Helena
- Writers’ playlist: creepy songs, strange yet humorous songs, fractured sounding
- TMas’ playlist: more haunting than creepy, Antony & The Johnsons have a lot of longing
- Our picks: Bjork’s Homogenic (“Pluto,” “Bachelorette,” “All Neon Like,” and “All Is Full of Love”)
Cosima
- Writers’ playlist: lots of bass music (drum and bass, dubstep, etc.), eclectic
- TMas’ playlist: some bass music too; songs with contrast (pretty/beautiful elements and harsher elements)
- Our picks: Venus Hum “Surgery in the Sky,” Suzanne Vega “Blood Makes Noise” (But blood makes noise / It’s a ringing in my ear / Blood makes noise / And I can’t really hear you / In the thickening of fear)
- Stephanie would like to think that there’s also a lot of LGBT-friendly, outspokenly political artists on Cosima’s iPod, like The Gossip, Sleater-Kinney, Ani DiFranco, and Dar Williams
Alison
- Writers’ playlist: few showtunes (“All That Jazz” is mostly upbeat but does involve the singer murdering her husband and sister; “Memory” from Cats), pop songs (particularly ‘90s pop songs)
- TMas’ playlist: all showtunes, but some interesting picks “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Mis & “Gethsemane (I Only Wanted to Say)” from Jesus Christ Superstar
- Our picks: Fastball “The Way” (not just because one of the lyrics is “They drank up the wine” – a couple leaving their life behind in pursuit of happier times)
- Kris suspects that Alison had boy band posters on her bedroom walls as a teen
