Lucy seeks help from an ex to determine the significance of the device that Jules stole from Darros. Jules takes Eleanor to visit her mother to convince her not to give up on finding a cure for early on-set Alzheimer's. Lucas confronts Kira about her deception as she tries to protect him from the fallout of her encounter with Emily.
Title Reference?
- Possibly a play on the phrase “The Paradox of Choice,” which is the title of a 2004 book by psychologist Barry Schwartz. In this book, Schwartz argues that while more choice should theoretically allow people more freedom and happiness, paradoxically, having more choices has resulted in our feeling less happy and seeking things that make us feel worse.
- The title could also be a play on the phrase “the paradox of joy.” While this phrase isn't as well-established, the “paradox of happiness” or the “happiness paradox” encapsulates the idea that the active pursuit of happiness often fails to make people happy. In trying to find happiness, people may overlook things in their life that are already making them happy.
Lucy & Jack
- As Jack's comments alluded to in a previous episode, he is getting tired of being in a holding pattern.
- Is Lucy caught in a happiness paradox of sorts? She decided to look for answers to protect what she had with Jack and Charlie, but in pursuing that goal, she is risking the happiness she already has with them.
- However, now that Lucy knows more about the other printouts and that the technology is in the hands of someone untrustworthy, her dilemma will likely be more of an ethical one.
- Lucy asks her ex PJ (we were right!) to help them figure out that the next generation Apple Watch is an indestructible security token. PJ says it's part of a multi-factor authentication to access bank information, but maybe the password is protecting something other than money?
Printouts Assemble!
- From the previous episode but still a fun line, “Jules. Eleanor. Me, me. Me, me.” Stephanie was excited to see the dynamic between the three “Eleanors.”
- Who doesn't like a car karaoke moment? The printouts again are connected through music with a sing-along to Peaches' 2009 cover of “Search and Destroy,” originally performed by The Stooges.
- Eleanor gives Jules an answer to what she’s seeing in the dream she and Lucy keep having. And has a little bit of a “things to tell your younger self” moment.
- Kris appreciates that the Printouts have bonded enough to really want to fight for each other.
Eleanor & Kira
- Jules convinces Eleanor to visit her mother, so Kathy Baker returns as Melissa. Kathy Baker is a veteran actress who has appeared in films such as The Right Stuff, Edward Scissorhands, and Cold Mountain, as well as many TV shows including Picket Fences, Boston Public, and Medium.
- Do we think Darros actually used old medical scans to make Jules? (Melissa doesn't really answer Eleanor's question about them.)
- Eleanor agrees to work with Kira to find a treatment for the printouts, but the state of their relationship is still up in the air. Where will they work now that Darros has taken Additive out of Kira's control?
- Callback to the mirrored elevator scene of 1×05 — the elevator scene in this episode felt colder and the reflections emphasized the distance between the characters
- Kira reveals why she stole Lucas's blood donation — it was part of Eleanor's treatment.
Lucas & Felix
- Lucas states that he doesn't see God in printout Eleanor now that he knows her origins. One of the key tenets of Quaker belief is that of an inner light, that there is something of God in everyone. Lucas saying that he doesn't see God in Eleanor sounds like a crisis of faith.
- While Quakers have not been confronted with this particular technology, their reaction to similar topics in the past makes Lucas's reaction surprising.
- Rhona seems like a nice person, but Lucas's comment that she is the only person that he can trust makes Stephanie nervous.
- Felix and Lucas have the best and the worst reactions to Kira's confession. Lucas is understandably very upset that he didn't get to say goodbye to his mother, while Felix offers empathy due to his personal experience.
- Felix and Colin had stayed together!! But it sounds like Colin died. Kris is now finding it particularly odd and sad that Kira didn’t confide in him when Eleanor got sick.
- Felix gives Kira such a Felix pep talk, holding her accountable for her bad actions but offering compassion and direction on what she must do next.
Darros, The Suits & Effing Xander
- Tom is in trouble! Darros is clearly displeased, and Tom might consider taking a long vacation somewhere. But we suspect he'll probably try to prove himself in some way that's dangerous for Kira and the printouts.
- Emily faked her own death with Kira's help. How might she assist Kira and the printouts in the future? Will she be “dead” for long?
- Xander, you noodle! Not Craig!!!!! Why?!?!?
~Echoes~
- Scotty’s Diner has to be named for original OB Scott, right?
- Lucy passing out burner phones to the other printouts
- Kira recklessly grabbing a trained agent’s gun. So like her mother.
- They're sick, Delphine, and the lesbians are going to come up with a cure!
