Project LEDA ended eight years ago, and Cosima has spent that time playing it safe professionally. But when she interviews for a job at the Genetic Research Institute of Toronto, Cosima is confronted with her DYAD past and insinuations that DYAD's work has been continued. When GRIT is bombed soon after Cosima's interview, Delphine tries to use her contacts in national security to find out more information. Charlotte finds evidence on the internet that an unknown Leda clone in Boston is suffering from the clone disease, which reignites tensions concerning whether the clones should go public about their identities.
Kris and Stephanie discuss episodes 1×01 and 1×02 of Orphan Black: The Next Chapter, “Our Needs to Shape Us, Part One and Two.”
Episode Title Reference
“We’ll have to be very careful how we allow our needs to shape us.”
Octavia E. Butler, Parable of The Sower
Reunited with Clone Club
- Hearing the Two Fingers theme brought a huge smile to Stephanie’s face
- Hearing Tatiana Maslany as Sarah is what hit Kris the hardest
- Audiobook format allows for more exploration of characters’ thoughts
- Fun and interesting to hear how Clone Club is doing 8 years later: the bonds that have formed, what has changed and what has stayed the same
Vivi Valdez & GRIT
- Starts us off outside of clone club; set up to be the “Sarah” of this “next chapter” of clones
- Cuban immigrant parents; auburn, curly hair
- Undercover operative for the CIA
- Unofficial inquiry into GRIT, worries about a biological weapon due to a small group of CIA “family” getting sick
- Likely refers to the ill, unknown Leda clone who Charlotte finds on the Internet
- Part of a younger group of “Leda” clones? Does her memory of “other Vivis” suggest that they might have been raised more like Castor (as a cohort by the CIA) for a time? Or at least with more awareness of each other than the older Leda clones?
- Or maybe like the European clones from the comics?
- Crushing on Arun but trying not to show it — because he's a colleague? Did something happen between them in the past and she's trying to keep it normal?
Clone Swap! Vivi as Cosima
- “She couldn’t get caught. And especially not in fucking Canada. Even if she didn’t get burned, she’d die of shame. And if she did get burned, she’d lose her whole life. Her identity.”
- How did Sturgis know about Leda clones? How does he connect into the complicated web of organizations and experiments related to the original clone project?
- He mentions the TAG project was supposed to be about healing (shades of LIN28A gene mutation that was of interest to Westmorland) but indicates that he was surprised the project actually seemed to be about a biological weapon (shades of Castor).
- Too bad Sturgiss didn't have an eyewash station as well as a safety shower — Vivi could have gotten a little less wet.
Cosima & Delphine
- They still make Stephanie sigh.
- Glimpses of little compromises (Cosima is late and forgets their anniversary but Delphine doesn't mind; Delphine burns the cake and doesn't put quite enough garlic in the beef bourguignon), but pushes and pulls of their different perspectives are still present in their argument about going public about the clone disease
- Cosima feels stagnant, resents Delphine's ability to be successful
- Also in conflict about having a child. Delphine, as usual, seems a bit more comfortable with using technology to manipulate someone's genome than Cosima does. However, is that really Cosima's main discomfort? Or is it just a cover for her uncertainty of whether she wants to be a parent?
- The Slow March Toward the First Same-Sex Couple to have a Baby — an accessible article about different breakthrough techniques in conceiving children for couples who have the same gametes
Charlotte & Kira
- Setting Charlotte and Kira up to be more clearly defined, independent characters
- Charlotte and disability
- Of course, Kira is a handful
- Also allows a small glimpse of what Sarah is up to: trying to make it work with Cal (again) and (even more) protective of Kira
