Throughout the first season, Sarah changes from a transient con artist looking out only for herself, her daughter, and Felix to the lynchpin of Clone Club. Kris and Stephanie discuss Sarah as an antihero as well as her story arc and relationships with family.

Sarah as antihero

  • Introduction: steals a dead woman’s purse, then identity
  • Involved with drug dealing/dealers
  • Left her young daughter for ten months
  • Abusive relationship with Vic: “I hit him first this time.”
  • Uses Paul sexually so that she wouldn’t be caught impersonating Beth
  • It’s recently been noted how popular/prevalent the male antihero has become, and some really good female antiheroes, such as Sarah Manning, have started showing up on television as well.

Sarah as lead character

  • Given the most complete character arc
  • Ep 1: returning from 10-month absence with the intention of getting Felix & Kira and running again
  • Ep 7: “I don’t do run.”
  • Ep 10: Kills Helena to protect herself/Kira/other clones

Sarah in Variation Under Nature

Sarah and family

  • Felix – Sarah’s most stable relationship. Sarah seems to be the only one with a sibling. Does that make it easier to adjust to being a clone?
  • Kira – Sarah’s heart/achilles heel
  • Mrs. S – somewhat contentious relationship, possibly because they do care about each other so much (?)
