Sarah enlists Art’s help to find Kira and is surprised to discover where the trail leads. Meanwhile, Alison is grappling with her guilt over Aynsley’s death, and Cosima is settling in at Dyad. We share first impressions of the second episode of Season 2 of Orphan Black, “Governed by Sound Reason and True Religion.”
Sarah
- DO NOT mess with Sarah’s family.
- Has inducted Art into Clone Club.
- SM and FD forever (!)
- We love that Sarah consults with Kira about whether to trust Mrs. S and if they should leave.
Feedback from Wilfred about Art
Subject line: Art’s a Hero
“The reason for me to write is too ask Kris, How’s Art looking now? lol. I knew he was a good guy.”
- While Stephanie wouldn’t have gone so far as to call Art a hero in the last episode (his “She almost trusts me, Ang” was very ambiguous), he does seem to be on Sarah’s side given his actions in this episode.
Mrs. S
- She DID have Kira!
- Describes her care of Kira as “bulletproof.” Ironic, considering.
- HOLY CARP. Mrs. S is terrifying.
- Motivations still in question, but (I think) has proven herself to be on Sarah’s side.
- But why does she lie to Sarah about the Project LEDA photo?
- Mrs. S’s hair looks fantastic in this episode.
Alison
- Aynsley’s funeral
- HOLY CARP. Alison just re-realized that Donnie is her monitor!
- “Blood buds” with Sarah Stubbs.
- Creepy, handsy director. Gross.
- Musical continues to be hilarious, very Waiting for Guffman
- Donnie’s a pretty good monitor, but a terrible spy.
- Alison’s sobriety didn’t last long. “I think I need to keep drinking for awhile and then I’ll have an idea.”
Felix
- Provided the new, green clone phones.
- Designated clone counselor
- Return of the bum! And Teddy!
Cosima
- Impressed with Sarah’s antics
- “Clone jail”
- Playful teasing and flirting with Delphine. It’s the Science Girlfriends version of domesticity! Shopping lists! Frequent use of the words “our” and “we”!
- Delphine looks pissed then terrified when Rachel interrupts their smoochies
- Delphine’s wide-eyed stare/glare at the door
- Cosima just can’t contain the cheekiness this episode.
- Rachel says to Cosima, “I assure you, the original DNA was robust. We believe our issues stem from the cloning procedure.” “I want you to tell me why she’s different than we are.” – do we think that she’s going around Leekie by asking Cosima to look into it?
Helena
- Kris is more worried about Helena now that she’s in the clutches of Prolethean farmers than when Sarah shot her.
- She’s a mirror twin! That theory has been floating around fandom. Clone Club is so smart.
- Organ mirroring explains better how she survived the gunshot and rebar but not the trauma and the bloodloss
Feedback about Helena
- From Colby:
“Doesn’t it kinda all makes sense that the start of season 2 would be the night before Easter? I, for one, am very happy to see Helena back.”
- Rebecca (@rebeccatbs on Twitter) mentioned, “I can’t believe you didn’t mention that Helena duct taped her wound!” Stephanie was apparently so excited to see Helena that she didn’t notice the duct tape! Kris noticed the duct tape but not the belt. Helena is hardcore.
Proletheans
- Creepy guy who buttons up his shirt all the way is named Mark.
- DAMMIT. Tomas is back. Flagellate yourself harder, Tomas. You deserve worse… . And then he gets it.
- Mark kills Tomas with a bolt through the head, which is the same way cows are slaughtered
- That’s quite the introduction that Peter Outerbridge gets as Henrik.
- We’re getting bad vibes from Gracie.
- Kris DOES NOT like where this is going with Henrik’s plans for Helena.
The Ending
- Sarah, Felix & Kira going off to who knows where
- Alison left with her husband as her monitor and no allies to turn to, hitting the alcohol and pills hard
- Helena in the clutches of folks who seem to want to breed her
- Cosima is the only clone Stephanie is not IMMEDIATELY worried about, but there is still her looming respiratory illness and working for Dyad to concern us. (Kris mentions that at least Cosima has Delphine, and Stephanie said in the episode that Cosima does have that one up on Sarah, but she meant Alison. Cosima has a supportive friend/partner, while Alison doesn’t.)
Stray Thoughts
- Angie DeAngelis is on the case!
- “I found God. It turns out the Lord has deep pockets.”
More feedback about 2×01 “Nature Under Constraint and Vexed”
From Marshal:
“I really wanted to point out 1 piece of amazingly geeky fanservice in this episode: In the first Delphine/Cosima scene, just as Delphine collects the blood sample, the score reprises the main theme to
Ginger Snaps
(composed by Michael Shields), one of John Fawcett’s best films. The parallels in the scenes are also uncanny as that film focuses on the troubled relationship between two young women in crazy circumstances.”
From Dan:
“Paul’s reaction to Sarah’s smack was interesting. I didn’t really pick up on anything in Sarah’s body language or expression to indicate she was only hitting him for appearances and presumed he’d let her go, but then afterward she doesn’t immediately run, and he complains about her hitting his face. Maybe she was thinking Paul would pick up on her intent after knocking Rachel unconscious, and, so far, he has helped her within his limits.”
- The exchange between Sarah and Paul was really interesting.
- She hits him but seems to feel really guilty/conflicted about it afterward, but she can’t decide whether she can drop the gun or not.
- Where
was
Paul this week? Did he convince Rachel, etc. that Sarah escaped his grasps on her own? Was he just brushing up on his Mandarin?
- We forgot to mention that Dan’s email also included the phrase “post-coital phlebotomy,” which is one of the most awesome/oddest phrases ever included in an email we’ve received.
